Dua 23 Praying for parents is an atonement for sins:
(Surah Bani Israel/Al-Isra (17), Verse 24
رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًا
Rabbir hamhumaa kamaa rabbayaanee sagheera.
My Lord! Have mercy on them, just as they reared me when I was [a] small [child]!
(Surah Bani Israel/Al-Isra (17), Verse 24)

Someone asked Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (A.S.): "If a mother passes away immediately after childbirth without raising the child, [how does the child owe her rights]?"
The Imam replied: "Her care during pregnancy is sufficient to establish her rights over the child."
Loving one’s mother, honoring her, acting upon her advice, sitting with her, speaking kindly to her, caring for her in old age, praying for her—all these are acts of worship commanded by Allah. Even looking at one’s mother’s face is worship.
The prayers, fasts, and good deeds of disobedient, rebellious children are wasted. Allah’s mercy does not reach those youth who disobey their parents.
(If a mother or father commands something unjust, oppressive, or involving shirk (associating partners with Allah) - meaning any act that entails disobedience to Allah - in such cases, obedience to parents is not permissible.)
